it is 6:01. back to you. at the top of the hour, here's a look at the stories happening today. it is back to school today in northern virginia. a dozen districts return including fairfax, arlington, louden and prince william counties. we will have a live report from vienna in four minutes. >> the former jetblue flight attendant who made national headlines last month heads to court. steven slater told off passengers, grabbed a beer and went down the emergency chute. he is charged with criminal mischief. the u.s. is bidding to host the 2018 to 2022 event and washington could host some of the games. rfk stadium held games in 1894. also today employees at discovery communications head back to work. their offices are back open for the first time since the standoff. lindsey mastis live in downtown silver spring with more on the story.

good morning, lindsey. >> reporter: good morning. discovery's 1900 employees were granted what is called liberal leave. that means they didn't have to come back to work until today. so far we have seen some people walking around the building but it is still early. some employees returned to the discovery headquarters the next day, right after the attacks because during the evacuation many people left their personal items like car keys, clap tops and cell phones. discovery had a dozen grief counselors on hand to help employees. >> it just makes me really sad that these kinds of senseless acts of violence are going on and people can't find a more creative way to protest than traumatizing thousands of people. >> reporter: i talked with a spokeswoman from discovery about coming back to work and she said most employees arening a to get back to work. i asked her about security precaution and she says they beefed up security over the past six days but they are not willing to go in to details

about what has been done. >> reporter: reporting live in silver spring, lendcy mastis, 9 news now. >> a lot of the discovery workers will probably be using the red line. the trains are moving again through stations closed over the weekend. the tacoma silver spring, forest glen, wheaton and glenmont stations were shut down for required maintenance work. workers installed new track, safety lights and made other upgrades. the white house is putting the finishing touches on a tax plan designed to help businesses and add jobs. the incentives would allow businesses to write off all new investments if plant and equipment until 2011. president obama assured labor day crowd in milwaukee the $50 billion program will not add to the deficit. >> i'm going to keep fighting every single day, every single hour, every single minute to turn this economy around and put people back to work. >> reporter: with mid-term elections aapproaching some political observers say even

democrats may have a tough time supporting any new plan aassociated with spending. summer vacation ends today for a does -- dozen school districts in the virginia area. it is back to school. here's a rundown of who is going back to school school bells will be ringing this morning. the biggest district on the list is fairfax county. kristin fisher is live outside of james madison high school with a preview of the fest day back. good morning. >> you know that summer is really over when fairfax county heads back to school. as of today, all school systems in the dc area will be back in session. you know there's certainly some perks when it comes to being the last school system in the

area to head back to school but there's some serious disadvantages, especially when it comes to procrastinating parents. and here's what i'm talking about. yesterday stores like target, wal-mart and staples were packed parent an kids buying last-minute supplies. 175,000 students will be starting school in fairfax county public schools making fairfax by far the largest school system in virginia an the 12th large nest the entire u.s. but hen you are dealing with those numbers, coupled with the pack you are the last system in the area to start school in many parents said they could hardly find any supplies left on the shelves. >> went to the store to get composition notebooks and pencils and there aren't any. >> there's almost nothing left in there. it is pretty picked over. we came here -- i can't remember if it was this target, even ten days ago, it was hard to find what we needed. >> reporter: now another

challenge at the start of fairfax county school year is the same thing other school systems across the county and country are dealing with and that is budget cuts. you have enrollment the highest it has ever been but there's less money to pay for it. it is all about doing more with less money and that is something many schools an businesses are having to dell with during these tough economic times. >> the bomb line, what can you tell us about new fees students and their parents will be facing in fairfax county this year. >> that's one of the ways that fairfax county public schools are trying to make up for additional costs. for instance, there's a ton of new student fees really. parents will have to shell out $75 for each advanced placement or international baccalaureate taste that their child takes and also it will cost parents of new students at fairfax schools $100 for every sport their child plays.

so certainly we will see some extra fees in both of those regards an it hits parents harder but it is really the only thing the school system could do to make up for the high enrollment an all of those budget cuts. >> all right. going to be a tough year for some of those parents who have to shell out that amount of money. thank you. a preliminary investigation determined an engine fire caused a series of explosions in the tysons corner garage. it happened though first floor of the garage across from nordstroms last night one car caught fire and the flames destroyed two nearby vehicle and damaged five more. reports of loud noises turned out to be tires exploding because of the heat. this morning, we are following a developing story. the second shooting in two days in northeast washington that sent teens to the hospital. this latest shooting happened last night on 53rd street near cloud place in northeast. a man and two teenager girls were shot.

good morning. we are back with an exclusive campaign 2010 interview. 9 news now sat down with mayor fenty and his wife michelle. mayor fenty is trailing in the polls and a loss in next week's primary would be the biggest fall in the city's young history of electing its leaders. so how did fenty get to this.? we got answers from me mayor himself and his wife michelle. they sat down for an interview at their home in northwest. >> if you do not find it in your heart to forgive me and give me a second chance i will have no one to blame but

myself. >> why are you asking them to forgive you? >> for not making an adjustment fast enough. we have to be more inclusive and engage more. we have to make people feel more part of the process. >> everything that he's ever done is for his community. >> reporter: his wife michelle fenty appealing to voters after being about sen from the campaign almost from the start. >> i'm hearing people describe my husband using adjectives that are absolutely shocking. >> reporter: mayor fenty won't say he was personally hurt when a poll showed him trailing gray by 17 points. >> huh are you doing, brother? >> reporter: his wife of 13 years and the mother of his children said it for him. >> it was heart breaking to think that there were so many people in this city, in his city, the city he was born and raised in, that feel that he's disconnected from the issues. >> one more year! >> how is it that a city is so

divide racially. the majority of white people love the job you are doing. black people just the opposite. >> it is bigger than me. that's for sure obviously there's been a disconnection with more than just results. going forward we need to bridge that connection. >> reporter: four years ago, mayor fenty was the unifying candidate. he won every precinct but heading to the democratic primary the polls show that a majority of african-american voters are given up on fenty. >> i think it is because they don't know him. and he didn't give them a chance to get to know him. i think that's part of him being a young politician and not being able to read what people want to see and feel. >> reporter: she says she's prepared if they lose. life will go on. he will only say, again and again that he kept his word to get things done. among other things, student

andrea, back to you. >> thank you, an you. the time is 31. you hear the school bell ringing and that means summer is over and the school year begins today in northern virginia. there are dozens of districts going back to school this morning. they are alexandria, arlington, fairfax, falls church, fredericksburg, king george, loudoun and manassas city. also manassas park, orange, prince william, stafford and warren counties. for all of those students it is back to school today. now the biggest school system in our region is fairfax county. kristin fisher is live outside of james madison high school in vienna where classes begin in 50 minutes. good morning, kristin. >> good morning, andrea. i'm actually standing with the man of the hour, the superintendent of fairfax county public schools dr. jack dale. thank you for being with us this morning. how's it going so far? >> easy. nothing has happened yet. we expect 2,000 more students this year, up to 177,000 kids, and we continue to grow a

little bit each year, but this year the good news is we have not made cuts in the schools. most of the cuts were outside of the schools and other support functions which will be limited. we have to watch those but in prior years we have had to make increases in class sizes, decreasing elective opportunities here at the high school level. >> reporter: and you are not doing that this year. >> no. basically status quo from previous years. >> that's good news. like many schools having to deal with higher enrollment and less money. one way you are trying to curb cost is with new fees for new students. can you talk about that. >> we put in place $100 per sport and it replicates what happened in other counties in northern virginia. and then we are asking students to pay $75 for the advanced placement and international baccalaureate test fees that will be later this spring. >> an extra burden on the parents this year. >> yeah, it is. unfortunately but that is one

of the things parents suggested to us that we put the fees in place rather than cutting teachers in the classroom. so we did that. >> reporter: best of luck. thank you for being with us. i know he's a busy man this morning. he is going to six or seven schools today so i will let you get on your way and one reminder for the parents that might be driving kids to who school this morning, remember to leave extra early because a lot of people are on the roads as people head back to work and back to school after the labor day weekend and summer break. also workers will head back to work at the discovery communications building. lindsey mast isdust is telling us what workers will see when they arrive this morning. >> reporter: a lot changed over the last six days. i spoke to a pokes woman with discovery channel and she said they have beefed up security and have taken a few days to go over the security plan. they are not willing to share those details just yet.

weapon last time. >> i asked about that specifically whether gasheds would be armed from now on and she said they are not yet ready to discuss their security plan. reporting live in silver spring, lency mast is-- lindsey mastis, 9 news now. youtube video shows how severe the fire was. horses were trapped in two barns that caught fire near the hollywood casino in charlestown. witnesses say people tried to rush in to say the animals as flames shot 50 feet in to the air. damage to the barns were put at $1.2 million. additional horses were rescued from two orprivately owned barns behind the track. crews are fighting a wildfire that destroyed dozens of homes in the colorado foothills them flames broke out yesterday near boulder. erratic 45-mile an hour winds are sending the fire in two directions at once.
